About Campus, v29 n2 p40-44 2024
In the ever-changing contexts of higher education in the U.S., the field of student affairs strives to evolve the knowledge and skills for effective professional practice. Through this article, the authors invite their colleagues to start a dialogue about another troublesome phenomenon that observed in the field - professional authenticity. Although the authors were unable to locate a specific definition of professional authenticity in scholarship, they look at the authenticity in teaching literature because student affairs practitioners often serve as educators on college campuses. The authors believe that the issue of authenticity in professional settings is highly significant in student affairs practitioners' lives due to its connections to daily experiences and professional identity development. For instance, authentic socialization with peers can foster an individual's professional identity through enhanced self-awareness and a deeper comprehension of self as a practitioner in the field.
