Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a program hosted by college campuses in which students use their traditional vacation to serve the community locally, domestically, or internationally. There are 101 recognized and accredited Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the United States (National Center for Education Statistics, 2019), however only 20 HBCUs offer any type of ASB program or service-learning initiative. The oldest ASB at an HBCU is the Howard University Alternative Spring Break (HU ASB), which was founded in 1994 under the Office of the Dean of the Chapel (Howard University, 2019). This article is about the program serving as the site for an instrumental case study exploring the relationship between Black women and their experience with a college-based travel program. The case study interviewed nine Black women that served in leadership roles during their Spring 2019 ASB experience.
