Combating Stereotypes with Short-Term Urban School Field Experiences
Wasserberg, Martin J.
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (Chicago, IL, Apr 13-16, 2023 and Virtual, May 4-5, 2023)
This study examines the effects of a short-term intensive out-of-area urban field experience on undergraduate pre-service teachers' perceptions of teaching in urban schools. During the experience, participants read scholarly literature, participated in dialogue circles, taught in an urban elementary classroom, conducted a community mapping project, interacted with scholars at an urban university, and were part of a reflective forum. Data were analyzed through participant reflections pre- and post-experience, and from focus groups conducted a month after. Findings provided evidence that the experience positively changed the perceptions of pre-service teachers regarding urban schools and increased confidence and desire to pursue teaching in urban environments.
