Efficacy Issues Facing the School Counselors amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Case Study
Selestine Richbourg Wood
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, National University
The problem addressed in this study was the inability of school counselors to assist students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to discover the lived experiences of professional school counselors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using Bandura's Social Learning Theory, I looked at eight professional school counselors' (PSCs') experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective was to comprehend the repercussions of the pandemic on PSCs and determine the most effective methods for meeting student needs and bridging the divide between school and community. In the analysis, I identified four key themes: stressors, challenges, and barriers, support, and communication, which highlighted the challenges counselors faced in providing support to students with anxiety during the crisis. The findings highlighted the potential disconnect between traditional counselor support structures and the immediate needs of students experiencing anxiety during a crisis. The study emphasized the need for further exploration of how school counselors can adapt their practices to better address student anxiety in a rapidly changing and uncertain environment. It also recommended that professional school counselors create and assess evidence-based interventions, focus on developing and testing fresh counseling approaches, improve professional development programs, and update training programs. Professional School Counselors work with educators and administrators to develop a school-wide strategy for managing students' anxiety and provide easily accessible mental health resources through technology. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the unique challenges and adaptations counselors face while supporting both students' and PSCs' mental health during the pandemic.
