The Impact of Antisemitism on Trauma Symptoms of Discrimination in Jewish College Students
Jenifer N. Beckman
ProQuest LLC, D.Phil. Dissertation, Mercer University
Discrimination has become a significant presenting concern among college students that is strongly correlated with distress, social isolation, and suicidal ideation, even after counseling treatment (Center for Collegiate Mental Health, 2023). Over the past several years, the surge in reported incidents of antisemitism on college campuses has become a concerning trend, with an increasing number of Jewish students reporting that they feel physically and emotionally unsafe on their college campuses (Center for Antisemitism Research, 2023). To support the mental health, resiliency, and emotional wellbeing of Jewish college students, it is imperative to delve deeper in exploring how exposure to antisemitism impacts distress. This dissertation study investigated whether exposure to antisemitism predicts trauma symptoms of discrimination among Jewish undergraduate college students in the United States using a quantitative analysis measuring the correlation between the frequency, intensity, and proximity of antisemitism exposure and trauma symptoms of discrimination. The study had a causal-comparative quantitative design and was based on a transformative worldview, trauma theory, cognitive schema theory, and ecological systems theory. Results indicated a significant positive correlation between the intensity and proximity of exposure to antisemitism and trauma symptoms, and especially between the intensity of microaggressions and physical antisemitism. These findings have important implications that should inform mental health interventions, campus policies, and educational programs that support Jewish student wellbeing.
