Gender and Racial Differences among College Athletes in Re-Injury Anxiety, Coping Strategies, and Psychological Distress Due to Injury

Re-injury anxiety is common among college student-athletes at the varsity (Podlog et al., 2011; Putukian, 2016) and club (Watanabe et al., 2023) level. Coping with sport injury has been studied in previous reviews (Putukian, 2016; Sims & Mulcahey, 2018) and literature (Kontos et al., 2013; Schlierf & Vosloo, 2020), but the relationship between re-injury anxiety, coping, and psychological distress due to injury has rarely been studied. The purpose of this study was to observe relationships among the variables of re-injury anxiety, coping strategy, and psychological distress due to injury given an athlete's gender and race, while controlling for sport level, sport type, and injury type. Student-athletes (n=80) were recruited from universities in the United States. A MANCOVA and PROCESS Model mediation analysis were used to analyze the data. Results indicated that male athletes reported significantly less psychological distress due to injury compared to female athletes (t(78) = -2.444, p = 0.008). Avoidance coping strategies (e.g., denial, venting, substance use, behavioral disengagement, and self-blame) had a significant indirect effect on the relationship between re-injury anxiety and psychological distress due to injury (B = 0.199, C.I. [0.0096, 0.3779]). Implications for research, theory, and practice are discussed given the results of the study.
