Compassion Fatigue in Higher Education: Exploring the Impact of Student Communication on Christian Female Adjunct Faculty
Donna Maria Colby
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Regent University
Compassion satisfaction (CS) and compassion fatigue (CF) are well-documented phenomena within healthcare, representing the positive emotions derived from aiding others and the emotional strain of caring for those in distress (Figley, 1995; Stamm, 2010). This research addresses a gap literature regarding CS and CF in higher education, particularly among female adjunct faculty. This demographic constitutes the largest teaching cohort in American colleges and universities (AAUP, 2017), often tasked with teaching remedial students and large introductory courses with minimal financial compensation and institutional support (Auerbach et al., 2018; Danaei, 2019). Given the significance of gendered communication and the influence of Christian worldview on compassion, exploring CS and CF experiences among Christian female adjunct faculty is of significant importance. This dissertation draws upon Work as a Calling Theory (Duffy et al., 2019) and the I-Thou philosophy (Buber, 1958) as theoretical frameworks, utilizing the Professional Quality of Life scale (ProQOL) to delve into the interplay between personal, client, and work environments (Stamm, 2010). This research contextualizes the experiences of female adjunct faculty within the broader landscape of higher education, characterized by the commodification of education and the student-as-customer model. Findings indicate communication within the work environment contributes to CF and communication within the client [student] environment serves as a source of both CS and CF.
