ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how Latino employees of a nonprofit organization describe their experiences when providing advice to Latino youth in pursuing post-secondary education in the Northern United States. The participants in the study included 41 Latino employees of a nonprofit organization for qualitative questionnaire and subset 10 Latino employees of a nonprofit organization for a one-on-one virtual interview. The theoretical framework for this study was Social Capital Theory to explain how students can benefit from relationships with caring adults to reinforce the behavior necessary to succeed academically. Two research questions guided this study: How do Latino employees describe their college advisement experiences when advising Latino youth to pursue post-secondary education? How do Latino employees of a nonprofit organization use social capital in their college advisement practices? Thematic analysis was used to produce seven themes for this research study: (1) college and career activities as resources; (2) creating a college-going culture environment; (3) belonging and relationship; (4) student support; (5) Latino parental engagement in education; (6) socioeconomic limitations and cultural stereotypes; (7) connection and support of caring adults. From the relationship influence and social and economic limitations, two subthemes were created: counselor-students expectation and cultural stereotypes. Finding revealed that the college advisement services provided to Latino students were influential in enhancing the social capital deficits of the Latino students to pursue post-secondary education.
