Directing Associate Faculty: A Rich Resource for the Basic Course.
Dixson, Marcia D.
This paper presents a chronological guide (from hiring to evaluating) in directing associate faculty in communication studies. The paper reviews the small amount of research and advice published in this area. It discusses hiring and orienting associate faculty, standardization of the basic course in speech communication, and empowering, developing, and evaluating associate faculty. The paper draws on the personal experience of an associate faculty member and basic course director along with the results of a survey of associate faculty in the communication department at Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne, which indicated that associate faculty did not grade significantly "easier" than regular faculty. Contains 11 references. A sample student evaluation form and an associate faculty survey are attached. (RS)
