The relationship between parent participation and academic achievement in elementary schools is examined using statistics from the Chicago (Illinois) public schools and a survey of principals and presidents of local school councils. The questionnaire assesses the extent of parent participation in the schools. Data from initial or telephone responses from principals or school council presidents from 289 schools are evaluated in terms of the following parameters: (1) communication with parents; (2) effective parenting programs; (3) parent support of the school; (4) service to parents; and (5) total parent participation. Academic achievement is measured using scores on the Illinois Goal Achievement Program (IGAP) tests. The results show that the level of involvement between parent and school is significantly related to achievement in both mathematics and reading. The home-school partnership is a significant factor in student achievement, particularly in schools often described as disadvantaged.
