Commissioner's Report to the Education Committees of the Senate and General Assembly on Violence and Vandalism in the Public Schools of New Jersey for the Period July 1, 1988 to June 30, 1989.
New Jersey State Dept. of Education, Trenton.
Incident reports of violence, vandalism, and substance abuse prepared by local school districts for the 1988-1989 school year are summarized and compared with reports from previous years (1984-1988). The data are based on summarized information received in county offices of education from school districts. The data collected for this report are based on aggregates and therefore do not identify causes or situational specifics of the reported acts. Findings indicate that the most frequently reported incidents, in decreasing order of occurrence, are vandalism; violence, and substance abuse. A section on the Department of Education's response reviews prevention and intervention programs and publications. Recommendations call for increased cooperation and communication among schools, the community, and agencies; provision of cocurricular activities for students; and development of discipline policies and prevention plans at the district level. Appendices include public school safety legislation, report forms and instructions, definitions, a directory of regional curriculum service units, a list of departmental publications, and a list of state board resolutions. Tables present information on annual trends, the cost of vandalism, and a list of district disciplinary actions. (LMI)
