A statistical and narrative summary of the results of the 1985-1986 Survey of Earned Doctorates is presented. Basic information, such as sex, field of study, institution, and year of Ph.D., is presented for all of the 31,770 doctorate recipients, while complete questionnaire data are included for 29,696 Ph.D. recipients. Research and applied-research doctorates in all fields are covered, excluding degrees such as the M.D., D.D.S, O.D., D.V.M., and J.D. Tables provide the following information for 1986: number of doctorate recipients by sex and subfield; number of doctorate recipients by citizenship, racial/ethnic group, and subfield; statistical profile of doctorate recipients by field of doctorate; sources of support in graduate school of doctorate recipients by sex and summary field; state of doctoral institution of doctorate recipients by sex and summary field; and statistical profile of doctorate recipients by racial/ethnic group and citizenship status. Also covered are: the number of doctorate recipients by subfield, 1976-1986; demographic trends of doctorate recipients in 30 selected fields, 1958-1986; and trends in postgraduation plans of doctorate recipients in 30 selected fields, 1958-1986.
