Teaching at Stanford: An Introductory Handbook. Revised Edition.
Fisher, Michele, Ed.
A handbook on teaching is presented that covers teaching preparation, the first teaching experience, teaching methods, testing and grading, instructional evaluation and improvement, relationships with students, and teaching resources. An introductory section briefly describes programs for faculty and teaching assistants and programs for students at Stanford University's Center for Teaching and Learning. Specific topics include: instructional objectives, the syllabus, time schedule and courses and degrees, classrooms, office hours, lectures and discussion sections, review sections, introductory laboratories and the teaching assistant's (TA) role, test construction, grading, academic honesty and dishonesty, course evaluations, counseling students, "problem" students, and relationships between faculty and TAs. Teaching resources at Stanford University are identified, and the following materials are appended: the honor code, the sexual harassment policy statement, and information on formal grievance procedures. Also included are evaluation forms for TAs, language sections, and laboratory sections. (SW)
