Evaluation of Mail Registration.
San Diego Community Coll. District, CA. Research and Planning.
The San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) implemented mail registration for all continuing students in spring 1986. In fall 1986, a comprehensive evaluation of the registration system was conducted to assess the impact of mail registration on student enrollment, to determine the impact of mailing class schedules to students' homes, to determine why students chose to enroll in person given the mail registration option, to receive feedback on the clarity of registration materials and the logistics of the process, and to compile a brief profile of students enrolling by mail. A direct mail survey of all continuing students who enrolled by mail for fall 1986 (N=8,125) and an intercept survey of continuing students who enrolled in person (N=4,638) were conducted. Study findings, based on a response rate of 26.3% to the mailed survey and 80.8% to the intercept survey, included the following: (1) 6% of those who enrolled by mail would not have enrolled at all if they had had to enroll in person; (2) 18% would not have enrolled by mail if they had not received their schedule of classes in the mail; (3) over 24% of those who enrolled in person said they did so because they could not pay the fees 2 months in advance; and (4) 17% experienced problems with mail registration. The survey instruments are appended. (LAL)
