Teenage Suicide: The Final Cry.
Henry, Philip N.; Morse, Maria
To learn more about the services available to youth at suicide prevention centers in North Carolina, a survey was conducted with 86 mental health and crisis prevention centers. The 16-item questionnaire examined the availability and extent of services offered by the centers, staffing patterns, sources of funding, and percentage of clientele between the ages of 13 and 24. The results indicated that centers received their funding from federal, state, and local governments; church groups; charitable organizations; or individuals. One facility dedicated 100 percent of its time to suicide prevention/intervention. For other centers the percentage of their services related to suicide prevention ranged from less than 5 percent to 50 percent. Although most centers reported having 24-hour service, other services such as hotlines, referral systems, crisis intervention, crisis housing, medical care, walk-in services, and special programs for adolescents varied extensively among centers. Staffing patterns and the percentage of youth served were both dictated by the size, purpose, and orientation of the facilities. This report contains an executive summary, research findings, statistics, and warning signs of potential teenage suicide. The survey questionnaire is included in the appendices and data tables are provided on national and state suicide statistics. The 86 mental health centers in the survey are listed in table form with center name, address, telephone number, counties served, hours, services offered, and other information given for each center.
