Factors associated with the speed and level of difficulty with which individuals adjust to separation and divorce were investigated. A scale was developed to analyze these factors, and included items dealing with the subdimensions of stress and the perception of the persons involved. Factor analysis of the scale items as well as additional tests indicated that: (1) stress is a multidimensional concept; (2) reliability is a problem because of extreme fluctuations in emotions and actions of the persons involved; and (3) validity is confirmed by use of self-esteem items in the scale. The appendices contain the Subdimensions of Stress Scale, the alpha factor analysis of the Stress Scale items, a comparison between the Scale and factor analysis clusters, the Ease of Role Transition Scale, and the Self Esteem Scale items.
