Conducting Energy Audits of Your Schools, or "The Last One Out of Town, Please Turn Out the Lights."
Tetzloff, Richard D.
A study of the energy usage for 20 St. Cloud (Minnesota) district buildings was completed by a firm of consulting engineers. For each building, the study established a Total Energy Index (TEI) composed of the fuel, electricity, and water consumed during the base line year, fiscal year 1977-78. In addition, the blueprints and any proposed modifications or remodeling plans were also studied. A goal for reduction in energy usage was established for each building of the study. A plan to achieve this stated goal was developed that related potential energy cost-savings to estimated expenditures necessary to achieve the savings. A summary of savings, initial costs, and payback periods for mechanical, electrical, and building envelope categories is included. Recommendations are made that onsite microprocessors be used to control as many of the routine functions as possible. General guidelines and specific recommendations are made to ensure the commitment of district personnel. At the conclusion are recommendations pertaining to one of the secondary buildings. These illustrate what measures of conservation could be utilized by other districts and how they might be used. (Author/MLF)
