The first step in implementing an intensive language program is a publicity campaign to arouse student interest. The second step involves the employment of some device for pre-enrollment screening. Among screening methods, objective measurements of aptitude or ability have proven useful in the selection process. In addition, objective means of determining enthusiasm or motivation may be utilized. Subjective assessments of motivation, such as a self-expectancy questionnaire, are also available. Methods that consider ability, aptitude, and incentive are superior to those that consider only one factor. However, motivation may well be the critical factor in determining success or failure in an intensive course, and should therefore be the primary criterion for admission. The best means of discouraging the enrollment of the less promising among those who express interest may involve a process of self-screening in which students are informed of the demanding nature of the program and allowed to determine for themselves whether their own ability and motivation will suffice. Finally, if self-screening is the only means of selection used, preregistration and postenrollment screening are advisable. (Author/JB)
