Communication apprehension among Hawaiians is the subject of three related papers in this document. Each of the papers defines communication apprehension and discusses the implications of such anxiety on a person's functioning in society. The first paper describes a study in which 16% of a sample of University of Hawaii students, also employed, scored in the high or severe apprehensive category on the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension. A program for lowering apprehension is also described. The second paper describes a study of undergraduates at the University of Hawaii that concluded that the university had a greater incidence of apprehension than elsewhere in the nation. The third paper explores the relationship between apprehension about speaking and about writing among University of Hawaii students and concludes that Hawaiian students perceived themselves to be more apprehensive about writing than did the general American population and that an inverse relationship existed between apprehension of oral communication and writing.
