Methods for Evaluating the Performing Arts (Artists) in the Academic Setting.
Gouran, Patrick D.
Methods for evaluating the creative endeavors of performing artist-educators in the academic setting are suggested in this paper. The following topics are discussed: the problems involved in evaluating artist-educators with an academic yardstick; factors that cause problems in evaluating performing artist-educators' work; the need to educate evaluators about the complexity of the performing arts; the benefits to performing artist-educators of submitting work to conventional research outlets; the responsibility of performing artist-educators to establish and clarify the criteria by which they are to be evaluated; possible instruments for evaluation; and ways that performing artist-educators can document the value of their work. Included with the paper are the following items: a scale for rating the directing, acting, background and technical aspects, lighting, and costumes of a performance in the American College Theatre Festival; a questionnaire to be used by Iowa State University Theatre actors in assessing their theatre directors and their experience acting in a theatre production; a description of a drama workshop offered by the Iowa State University Theatre; an evaluatory questionnaire for organizations that have hosted drama workshops; and data indicating the total number of hours of work individually contributed by cast members, production crews, theatre and stagecraft students, and employees in staging a theatrical performance.
