The Role of Employment in the Socialization of Mentally Retarded Persons.
Soloyanis, George
The paper presents 24 suggestions for the employment of mentally handicapped individuals. Each suggestion is described briefly and considerations or actions are posed as applicable. Among opportunities listed are free labor market status plus additional support, selective placement, quota system (requiring a percentage of those hired be handicapped), subsidized on the job training, cottage or home industries, subsidized enterprise, employer incentive schemes, and sheltered workshops. The issue of sheltered workshops is discussed in greater detail with exploration of such features and problems as selecting leadership, integrating services with other handicapped groups, and planning the program to include expansion and change. An overview of some rehabilitation programs in England, the United States, Poland, and Costa Rica is provided to demonstrate what has been done. (PHR)
