The word sort is a technique which capitalizes upon a child's natural feature analysis abilities. In a word sort the learner physically arranges words printed on small cards into groups. This technique can be used in many ways to help children draw conclusions about how words are related. There are two types of sorts: in "closed sorts" the criterion which the words in a group must share is stated in advance; in "open sorts" no criterion is stated. Word sorts are most effectively introduced in small groups of eight to ten children. Once the mechanics of sorting have been established through the use of picture cards, the teacher can initiate a closed sort focusing on a specific word feature illustrated by one of the cards. Next the teacher may introduce word card sorts, again using picture cards as key words. Finally, the teacher can introduce the open sort concept. Word sorts can be used equally well with advanced readers. They can also be used as games, thus presenting a viable alternative to traditional word study programs. Word sorts are flexible enough to be used with individuals and groups, with teacher direction or as independent activites. They grow with the children. (FL)
