The supply of scientists and engineers should be viewed not only in terms of quantity, but also in terms of quality and preparation. Forecasts have proven inaccurate in the past so that industry must assure an adequate quantity of students entering the science and engineering fields by the promise of employment. The quality of the professionals can be assured by attracting the best of the foreign students as well as the best American students. And good preparation can be assured by keeping the relationship between the industry and the educational community dynamic. Further, it is necessary for the universities to join in seeking additional innovative ways to make academic and industrial scientists and engineers more aware of each other's jobs and challenges through greater cooperative efforts.
