Individualizing at the University Level: Pros and Cons, Aches and Pains.
Rolfe, Oliver W.
This paper describes the individualized program in second-year French at the University of Montana. Learning packets were designed for the course, and each contained the following: (1) a list of learning objectives, (2) an activities map, (3) self-tests, (4) a preparation test, (5) the final test, (6) a conversation-pronunciation test, and (7) a progress chart. Class periods were devoted to developing the audiolingual skills, while most written work was considered an out-of-class assignment. The students worked in small groups, with the help of group leaders. Teacher and student reactions are summarized here, and a sample of one of the learning packets is given in the appendix. (PMP)
