Mariana Mejia Turnbull; Michelle MacRoy-Higgings; Brett A. Martin – Communication Disorders Quarterly, 2024
The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the linguistic content of the Spanish HINT and the Spanish AzBio sentence tests. The results revealed that the Spanish AzBio is linguistically more complex as compared with the Spanish HINT in terms of sentence length, complexity, and grammatical structure.

Willems, Melina; Acke, Frederic; Lannon, Beth; Leyssens, Laura; Maes, Leen; Marks, Luc – American Journal on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, 2022
Intellectual disability (ID) and hearing loss are frequent comorbid conditions, although otological problems often go unnoticed until picked up by screening. In the hearing program of Special Olympics (SO), athletes with ID are screened for otological problems. By retrospective analysis of all SO meetings between 2007 and 2017, more than 100,000…

Ann Kasperek; Annet Kingma; Vânia de Aguiar – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2023
Background: Understanding the different factors that determine vocabulary development in young children is essential for the diagnosis and rehabilitation of language disorders in children. Language development is closely related to other cognitive processes such as auditory verbal learning and memory. This research focuses on the development of a…

Ilia V. Markov; Ksenia S. Kharitonova; Elena L. Grigorenko – Reading Research Quarterly, 2025
Phonological awareness and phonological working memory are essential for successful language acquisition and development of literacy. Although this essence is language-universal, its degree varies for different languages, depending, in part, on language transparency. The current study analyzes the adapted versions of the pseudoword repetition test…

Marcy K. Hite; Alyson J. Chroust; Kerry Proctor-Williams; Jennifer L. Lowe – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2024
Purpose: Infants prenatally exposed to opioids exhibit withdrawal symptomology that introduce physiological noise and can impact newborn hearing screening results. This study compared the referral rate and physiological noise interpreted by number of trials rejected due to artifact on initial newborn hearing screenings of infants with prenatal…

Dambha, Tasneem; Swanepoel, De Wet; Mahomed-Asmail, Faheema; De Sousa, Karina C.; Graham, Marien A.; Smits, Cas – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2022
Purpose: This study compared the test characteristics, test-retest reliability, and test efficiency of three novel digits-in-noise (DIN) test procedures to a conventional antiphasic 23-trial adaptive DIN (D23). Method: One hundred twenty participants with an average age of 42 years (SD = 19) were included. Participants were tested and retested…

Kazuya Saito; Adam Tierney – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 2024
This article proposes a conceptual and measurement framework for postpubertal, L2 speech learning aptitude that is centered around domain-general auditory processing (i.e., representing spectral and temporal characteristics of sounds). To this end, we examine the construct and reliability of a battery of auditory processing tests by presenting the…

McGrath, Melissa A.; Fletcher, Kathryn L.; Bielski, Lynn M. – Psychology in the Schools, 2023
Children with normal hearing who present with listening difficulties (LiD) are frequently referred for assessment of auditory processing disorder (APD). Complicating diagnosis is the similarities of APD to other neurodevelopmental disorders, especially attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Due to well-documented deficits in executive…

Lionel Fontan; Jeanne Desreumaux – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2024
Purpose: The main objective of this study was to assess the existence of developmental effects on the performance of the Vocale Rapide dans le Bruit (VRB) speech-in-noise (SIN) identification test that was recently developed for the French language and to collect reference scores for children and adolescents. Method: Seventy-two native French…

Wilson, Uzma Shaheen; Browning-Kamins, Jenna; Boothalingam, Sriram; Moleti, Arturo; Sisto, Renata; Dhar, Sumitrajit – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2020
Purpose: The phase delay of stimulus frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs) has been proposed as a noninvasive, objective, and fast source for estimating cochlear mechanical tuning. However, the implementation of SFOAEs clinically has been thwarted by the gaps in understanding of the stability of SFOAE delay-based tuning estimates and their…

Flagge, Ashley G.; Davis, Tara; Henbest, Victoria S. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2020
Purpose: The Pitch Patterns Test (PPT) and the Duration Patterns Test (DPT) are clinical auditory processing tests that evaluate temporal patterning skills based on pitch (PPT) or duration (DPT) aspects of sound. Although temporal patterning tests are categorized under the temporal processing domain, successful performance on the PPT also relies…

Lisa L. Hunter; Jennifer Vannest; David R. Moore; Maria Barnes-Davis; Chelsea Blankenship; Lauren Prather; Jody Caldwell-Kurtzman; Nehal Parikh – Volta Review, 2023
Worldwide, 15 million babies are "born too soon" every year (Blencowe et al., 2012; Howson et al., 2013). Remarkably, prematurity survival rates now exceed 93% across all countries. More than 360,000 preterm babies survived in the United States in 2020; 10% of all births (Blencowe et al., 2012; Howson et al., 2013). While this is an…
