Reiss, Mary-Ann – Canadian Modern Language Review, 1983
Reviews the research literature on strategies and techniques employed by successful language learners and discusses the results of a questionnaire administered to 85 students, which dealt with specific learning tasks and their individual strategies. Responses of 18 A students are compared with responses of 18 C/D students. (Author/AMH)

Baldauf, Richard B., Jr.; Morley, Robert – Exceptional Child, 1979
Results of the pilot study indicated that the matching cloze procedure--which does not require language production skills--may provide the classroom teacher of educable mentally retarded children with an evaluation procedure which is both psychometrically and ontologically valid, as well as being easy to construct. (Author/DLS)

Hetrick, Ethel W. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1979
It was found, among other things, that rural Ss performed significantly below their mental ages more frequently than urban Ss; and that between the chronological ages of 10 to 14 years, while urban Ss appeared to perform as expected from mental ages, a significant number of rural Ss performed below expectations. Heath, Charles P. – 1984
Teachers and parents completed the Adaptive Behavior Scale-School Edition (ABS-SE) and the Adaptive Behavior Inventory for Children (ABIC) while 57 educable mentally retarded (EMR) (N=36) and slow learners (N=21) completed the Children's Adaptive Behavior Scale (CABS). Analysis of variance and T-test comparisons indicated higher ratings for SL…

Kulik, Chen-Lin C. – 1985
Inter-class ability grouping, i.e., assigning students to classes according to ability, is a controversial topic among parents, teachers, school administrators, and educational researchers. To determine the effects of inter-class ability grouping, a meta-analytic methodology was applied to 85 studies carried out in elementary and secondary…

Young, John J. – 1977
The paper describes the development of a program to meet the needs of 20 slow-to-learn developmentally delayed fifth and sixth grade students. Aspects covered include program rationale, strategy, design (including criteria for student selection and budgetary considerations), implementation (including information on individual lesson plans,…

Hetrick, Ethel W. – 1979
The Bender Gestalt protocols of 134 rural and 140 children (6-18 years old) found to have IQ scores in the slow learner range (IQ 70-84) were compared. The Bender Gestalt Test, used in psychoeducational evaluation to determine eligibility for special education placement, was administered to determine Ss' level of visual motor skills. Rural slow…

Pedrini, D. T.; And Others – 1974
Letter-letter, letter-number, and number-letter paired associates were used in this A-B, B-C, A-C study. There were two A-C lists, the positive-transfer stimulus-items of one became the negative-transfer stimulus-items of the other, and vice versa. Twenty subjects were included and each learned one A-C list. The main effects included, among…

Stellern, John; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1987
Investigation of the language-spatial lateralization of 76 intermediate grade right-handed regular education students found that "good" students had normal left hemisphere language and right hemisphere spatial lateralization but "poor" students had nonnormal lateralization. Academic problems and behavior problems were correlated with nonnormal…

Mink, Iris Tan; Nihira, Kazuo – Developmental Psychology, 1986
Examines the direction of effects between slow-learning children and their families in three family types: (1) learning-oriented, high residential quality; (2) achievement-oriented, low residential quality; and (3) outer-directed, with little achievement orientation, taking into consideration child variables of adjustment and adaptive behavior.…

Svendsen, D. – Child Psychology and Psychiatry and Allied Disciplines, 1983
Former slow learners were tested as children and at the age of 30 years. Subjects who had further education and a number of family and personal problems during childhood improved their IQ scores by 18.1 points; those with no further education and one or no problems improved only 5.0 points. (RH)

Boone, Randall; Higgins, Kyle – Journal of Special Education Technology, 1993
This 3-year longitudinal study used hypermedia computer-assisted instruction (CAI) to provide individualized reading instruction for approximately 300 students in grades K-3. The software provided reading lessons in a hypermedia format designed as supplementary material for a basal reader series. The low ability subjects achieved significantly…

Reisman, Elaine S.; Reisman, Joel I. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1993
Questionnaire responses from 65 supervisors in human service agencies and interviews with 27 employers, supervisors, and vocational program administrators indicated that employees with moderate special needs (in this case specific learning disabilities and low intelligence) surpass others in several positive work habits. Supervisors valued…

Sandi, Carmen; Cordero, M. Isabel; Merino, Jose J.; Kruyt, Nyika D.; Regan, Ciaran M.; Murphy, Keith J. – Learning & Memory, 2004
The polysialylated neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM) has been implicated in activity-dependent synaptic remodeling and memory formation. Here, we questioned whether training-induced modulation of PSA-NCAM expression might be related to individual differences in spatial learning abilities. At 12 h posttraining, immunohistochemical analyses…

Rothlisberg, Barbara A.; Liljestrom, Marilyn E. – 1984
In this survey, approximately 30 teachers chose from a list of 56 behavior descriptors those they thought characterized either the learning disabled or slow-learner/low-achiever populations. Results indicated that, as a group, teachers did not distinguish between learning disabled and other under-achievers on the listed behavioral descriptors,…
