In a study of special education programs in five urban school districts, parent interview data for 1,726 children (elementary school students) indicated how the students' problems were identified and how the medical system was involved in the diagnosis. Implications for physicians and educators are discussed. (SLD)

The diagnostic discourse of medical students and physicians in thinking-aloud protocols on paper cases was analyzed for evidence of semantic structure. A scoring algorithm for performance assessments is described that is based on expert judgments but requires the rating of only a sample of performances.
