Fox, Nathan A.; Davidson, Richard J. – Developmental Psychology, 1988
Examined were electroencephalogram (EEG) asymmetries during the presence of discrete facial signs of emotion among 10-month-old infants who were tested in a standard stranger- and mother-approach paradigm that included a brief separation from mother. Data underscore the usefulness of EEG measures of hemispheric activation in differentiating among…

Zung, Burton J. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Compared overall performance level for both hands combined (OPL) with several lateral deviation measures calculated from scores on a composite finger localization task (FLT) and a speeded pegboard task (SPT) administered to 92 kindergarten entrants. Results support the view that OPL and lateral deviation are not mutually confounded and, in large…

Fein, Deborah; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1985
Performance on a battery of cognitive measures was analyzed in terms of hand preference for 62 children (5-17 years old) with Pervasive Developmental Disorders including autism. There was a clear (though nonsignificant) trend on all tests for left-handers to have higher scores than right-handers. Mixed-hand preference Ss demonstrated the lowest…

Tsai, Luke Y. – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1984
A follow-up study of handedness in 34 autistic persons (mean age 8 years) supported the idea that there are many factors other than brain damage, hemispheric functioning, age, and follow-up interval that contribute to hand lateralization. (CL)

Newland, G. Anthony – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
A figural form of the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking was administered to 96 left-handed and 96 right-handed individuals. The left-handed subjects demonstrated greater creativity than the right-handed; females scored higher than males; and college-educated subjects scored higher than those with no college. (Author/BW)

Ray, William J.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1979
Reports two studies which examined the relationship among (1) the ability to determine horizontality, (2) a general test of spatial abilities, and (3) hemispheric activation as measured by lateral eye movements. (JMB)

Olson, Meredith B. – Gifted Child Quarterly, 1979
A study on the relationship between insight and hemispheric use in science courses for gifted students is briefly described. (Author/PHR)

Wilkerson, James E.; Brown, James – Physical Educator, 1979
The results of two research projects concerned with eye dominance, cortical dominance, handedness, and twisting direction are reviewed and indicate that twisting direction is not related to the other variables but is taught. (JMF)

Galaburda, Albert M. – Annals of Dyslexia, 1989
Autopsy analysis of eight dyslexic brains found that the ordinary asymmetry in a language-relevant area of the temporal lobe was missing. The greater development of the right side may reflect an increase in the total number of neurons involved in language processing, resulting in changes in interhemispheric interactions. (JDD)

Dunn, Bruce R.; And Others – 1981
Two studies examined the relationship between cognitive style as determined by conjugate lateral eye-movements and the ability to recognize correct inferences and specific items from textual and pictorial displays. Subjects were given related sets of sentences and pictures followed by separate inference and recognition memory tests. Results of…

Racle, Gabriel L. – 1979
Research conducted by Tadanobu Tsunoda on auditory and visual sensation, designed to test and understand the functions of the cerebral hemispheres, is discussed. Tsunoda discovered that the Japanese responses to sounds by the left and the right sides of the brain are very different from the responses obtained from people from other countries. His…

Kee, Daniel W.; And Others – Child Development, 1987
Left-hemisphere language specialization in right-handed children was tested in children previously classified as consistent or nonconsistent in their hand preference. Results showed that both male hand preference groups demonstrated asymmetric interference in dual task tapping performance. In contrast, only females associated with consistency in…

Gillberg, Christopher; And Others – Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 1984
Aims to obtain prevalence figures for left-handedness among 10-year-old Swedish children; to replicate some findings concerning Bishop's (1980) extended pathological left-handedness hypothesis; to evaluate the influence of factors such as the child's sex and reduced optimality in the pre-, peri-, and neonatal period; and to determine the…

Query, William T.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Examined the relationship between brain-behavior and hypnotic susceptibility in 70 alcoholic patients, using the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale and its Fromm-Weingarten modification. Results showed the two scales were interchangeable insofar as they measured the same ability, and indicated that hypnotic susceptibility is related to…

Bergen, Anne-Marie E.; Mosley, James L. – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1994
This study, involving adults with and without mental retardation and mental age-matched children, employed a lateralized presentation of Stroop color words, neutral words, and the subject's first name. Individuals with mental retardation experienced difficulty in effortful processing (inhibiting the reading response on the Stroop trials) and in…
