What Works Clearinghouse Rating

Kortekaas, Reinier W. L.; Stelmachowicz, Patricia G. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2000
This study examined developmental effects in auditory perception of word-final /s/ in inflectional morpheme contexts as a function of high-frequency (HF) bandwidth with normal hearing 5-, 7-, 10-year-olds and adults. The higher detection thresholds and larger clarity rating variances for the youngest participants support the use of extended…

Shirreffs, Janet; And Others
An investigation was conducted to identify the effects of exposure to selected entertainment environments on hearing threshold levels. Twenty-five normal hearing females were randomly assigned to one of the following five taped noise conditions: (1) a discotheque band, (2) a motor speedway, (3) a hotel dance band, (4) an amusement park, and (5) a…
Descriptors: Acoustical Environment, Analysis of Variance, Auditory Tests, Environmental Influences

Cattey, Tommy J. – Mental Retardation, 1985
Puretone auditory assessment of 21 adults with severe to profound mental retardation indicated that a bivariate plotting procedure of predicting hearing sensitivity from the acoustic reflexes should be included in an audiological test battery for this population. (CL)
Descriptors: Adults, Audiology, Audiometric Tests, Auditory Evaluation

Thompson, Gary; Folsom, Richard C. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1984
Results indicated no significant differences between conditioning procedures in regard to obtained MRLs (minimum response levels) number of stimulus presentations required to establish MRL (discounting conditioning trials), and number of false-positive responses observed during control trial for 60 premature infants at one or two years of age.…
Descriptors: Auditory Tests, High Risk Persons, Infants, Operant Conditioning
Mok, Mansze; Grayden, David; Dowell, Richard C.; Lawrence, David – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2006
This study aimed to (a) investigate the effect of using a hearing aid in conjunction with a cochlear implant in opposite ears on speech perception in quiet and in noise, (b) identify the speech information obtained from a hearing aid that is additive to the information obtained from a cochlear implant, and (c) explore the relationship between…
Descriptors: Adults, Assistive Technology, Auditory Perception, Auditory Evaluation
Waryas, Paul A.; Battin, R. Ray – Journal of Childhood Communication Disorders, 1985
The study presents normative data on Masking Level Difference (an improvement of the auditory processing of interaural time/intensity differences between signals and masking noises) for 90 learning disabled persons (4-35 years old). It was concluded that the MLD may quickly screen for auditory processing problems. (CL)
Descriptors: Auditory Evaluation, Auditory Perception, Auditory Tests, Aural Learning

Mapes, Frances M.; Moreau, Roberta – American Annals of the Deaf, 1980
To investigate students' ability to generalize auditory skills, precourse to postcourse measures were compared for an auditory training group (N=42) and a control group (N=7) on three auditory discimination measures: (1) the training sentences, (2) related but nontrained sentences (decoy sentences), and (3) a modified rhyme test. (Author/PHR)
Descriptors: Auditory Discrimination, Auditory Tests, Auditory Training, Deafness

Wightman, Frederic; And Others – Child Development, 1989
The auditory temporal resolving power of young children was measured using an adaptive forced choice psycho-physical paradigm that was disguised as a video game. (PCB)
Descriptors: Adults, Age Differences, Attention, Auditory Discrimination

Freyman, Richard L.; Nelson, David A. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1991
Frequency difference limens (DLFs) for pure tones were obtained over a wide range of frequencies and levels from 7 normal-hearing subjects and 16 ears of 12 listeners with sensorineural hearing losses. Results indicated that it is reasonable to use data from normal listeners' DLFs to evaluate DLFs from hearing-impaired listeners. (Author/JDD)
Descriptors: Adults, Auditory Discrimination, Auditory Evaluation, Auditory Tests

Gravel, Judith S.; Wallace, Ina F. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2000
Hearing sensitivity was examined prospectively in 114 young children as a function of otitis media with effusion (OEM)status in years 1, 2, and 3. Results indicated that children classified as bilaterally OME positive in years 1, 2, and 3 had significantly poorer hearing than children classified as bilaterally OME free at these periods. (Contains…

Jackson, Coleen O'Rourke – 1983
A pilot project evaluated the use of a microcomputer database system to maintain hearing screening, evaluation, and followup records in a school for physically, emotionally, or educationally handicapped children (6 months-18 years). Using a universal database management system for a microcomputer, a program was designed which would allow for easy…

Robinson, Dale O.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1988
Black (n=63) and White (n=74) infants, aged 6-13 months, were screened by tympanometry for middle-ear dysfunction. More White infants than Black failed initial screening. Retest of initial failures after a 6-week interval showed an overall reduction in failure rates, but the significant racial effect was still obtained. (Author/JDD)
Descriptors: Auditory Tests, Blacks, Ears, Failure

Widen, Judith E.; And Others – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1987
In a study of 15 individuals (ages 15-21) with Down Syndrome, auditory brainstem response (ABR) detection levels were elevated, response amplitude reduced, and latency-intensity functions were significantly steeper than for a matched control group. Findings were associated with an impairment in hearing sensitivity at 8000 Hz for the experimental…
Descriptors: Adolescents, Auditory Discrimination, Auditory Stimuli, Auditory Tests

Stankov, Lazar; Horn, John L. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1980
Studies on visual, musical, and speech perception abilities were used to construct auditory ability tests. Correlation and factorial analyses indicated separate capacities for auditory verbal comprehension, auditory immediate memory, temporal tracking, auditory cognition of relationships, discrimination among sound patterns, speech perception…

Marston, L. E.; Larkin, Maureen – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1979
The study investigates differences in the auditory discrimination ability of 24 elementary school age reading achievers and underachievers, as measured by standard audiometric tests and nonconventional auditory tests. The findings show that reading underachievers scored significantly poorer than reading achievers on some of the nonconventional…
