Total faculty earnings are compared with those of other professional occupations using earnings data collected by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. Comparisons show faculty earnings appear to be comparable to those of nonacademicians. The use of academic contract salary data results in an underrepresentation of academic earnings. (Author/MLW)

An examination of data from 1960 and 1980 reveals the following: (1) black women's earnings increased during these decades; (2) gaps in earnings remain between women and men; and (3) black women received more equitable treatment in government than in industry. Investigates the relationship between wage-earner status, occupational level, and job satisfaction. Findings of this study suggest that sex is a more important determinant of job satisfaction than wage-earner status, and occupational level is a better predictor of job satisfaction than either sex or wage-earner status. Findings of a study show that relative salary increases for faculty and administrators were quite similar since the early 1970s. The small salary advantage for administrators appears to be attributable to gains in those positions whose work most clearly parallels work done in the private sector. (MLW)
