Prieve, Beth A.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1991
The paper describes the unexpected finding of evoked otoacoustic emissions from one ear of a subject with severe-to-profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. It is suggested that the subject may have a group of surviving outer hair cells in some regions of the left cochlea with corresponding inner hair cell or neural damage. (Author/DB)

Mok, Mansze; Grayden, David; Dowell, Richard C.; Lawrence, David – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2006
This study aimed to (a) investigate the effect of using a hearing aid in conjunction with a cochlear implant in opposite ears on speech perception in quiet and in noise, (b) identify the speech information obtained from a hearing aid that is additive to the information obtained from a cochlear implant, and (c) explore the relationship between…

Dahle, Arthur J.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1979
Audiological assessment of 86 children (mean age 38 months at last evaluation time) with congenital cytomegalovirus infection revealed progressive hearing loss in four of 12 Ss with sensorineural hearing impairments. Case descriptions documented the progression of the hearing loss. (Author)

Goffman, Lisa; Ertmer, David J.; Erdle, Christa – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2002
A method is presented for examining change in motor patterns used to produce linguistic contrasts. In this case study, the method is applied to a child who experienced hearing loss at age 3 and received a multi-channel cochlear implant at 7. Post-implant, acoustic durations showed a maturational change. (Contains references.) (Author/CR)

Martin, Jeffrey S.; Jerger, James F.; Ulatowska, Hanna K.; Mehta, Jyutika A. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2006
This case study focuses on a bilingual, older man who spoke Polish and English and showed weaknesses on clinical measures of dichotic listening in English. It was unclear whether these test results were influenced by the participant's facility with his second language or by other nonauditory factors. To elucidate the nature of this deficit, the…

Renda, Susan C.; Downs, David – Volta Review, 1993
A case study is presented of a girl with a hearing impairment for whom extensive, corroborative hearing testing delayed the start of intervention. This contributed to speech, language, listening, and behavioral problems and prolonged her parents' denial of the hearing loss. Remediation began after starting aural habilitation based on limited,…

Owens, Elmer; Raggio, Marcia – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1987
A tracking procedure (lipreading of word groups that are repeated by a hearing-impaired listener), emphasizing practical coping strategies and practice in responding to cues in connected speech, was utilized with one deaf adult subject. Tracking scores before and after training illustrate the value of the procedure for evaluation and training.…

Johansen, Kjeld – 1988
A study examined the hearing of learning disabled students (such as dyslexics) in an attempt to classify, identify, and design auditory stimulation procedures. Subjects, 40 students from seventh-grade classes and 40 volunteers (ages 9 to 23) with reading and spelling difficulties, were given listening tests. Results indicated that many of the…

Vogel, Irene – 1976
The language of the deaf has only recently become an area of concern for linguists. Of special interest are questions of the systematicity of deaf speech (is it systematic or idiosyncratic and none-rule-governed?) and the nature of its deviation from the speech of hearing people. The study presented here is an effort on the part of linguists,…
