Hussong, Andrea M.; Huang, Wenjing; Curran, Patrick J.; Chassin, Laurie; Zucker, Robert A. – Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, 2010
Although previous studies show that children of alcoholic parents have higher rates of externalizing symptoms compared to their peers, it remains unclear whether the timing of children's externalizing symptoms is linked to that of their parent's alcohol-related symptoms. Using a multilevel modeling approach, we tested whether children aged 2…

Malone, Stephen M.; McGue, Matt; Iacono, William G. – Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2010
Background: The maximum number of alcoholic drinks consumed in a single 24-hr period is an alcoholism-related phenotype with both face and empirical validity. It has been associated with severity of withdrawal symptoms and sensitivity to alcohol, genes implicated in alcohol metabolism, and amplitude of a measure of brain activity associated with…

Schonfeld, Lawrence; And Others – 1987
Two types of elderly alcohol abusers are described. Early onset or long-term alcohol abusers are abusers with long-standing behavioral problems considered well known to the social service delivery system. Late-life onset elderly alcohol abusers are those whose drinking problems began in the later years, after age 50, often in response to stresses…

Weeber, Stan – Journal of Alcohol and Drug Education, 1981
Discussed how driving-while-intoxicated (DWI) repeaters differed signigicantly from nonrepeaters on 4 of 23 variables tested. Hughes, Stella P.; Dodder, Richard A. – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1983
Self-administered questionnaires were collected from 534 college students and analyzed by path analysis, which explained up to 47 percent of the variation in certain kinds of problem drinking. The strongest single predictor of problem drinking was found to be quantity and frequency of consumption, but precollege drinking was also important.…

Barnes, Grace M. – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1984
A representative household sample of adolescents (ages 12-17) and their parents were interviewed. Findings support the theory that adolescent alcohol abuse is part of a complex psychosocial problem behavior syndrom. A high degree of parental nurturance may be a significant deterrence to alcohol abuse and more general deviant behavior. (Author/BS)
