Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of the Labor Market Experience of Youth, examined the aspirations and expectations of Americans aged 14-21 years regarding their education and future fertility. Found family background, social values, and sex role traditionality to be strong predictors of educational and fertility expectations. (GC)

Uses Project Talent data to replicate and extend earlier research on the effects of college organization on student educational and career plans. Concludes that American colleges produce graduates who are remarkably homogeneous in their plans and aspirations once differential recruitment is taken into account. (PR)

Tests the hypothesis that migrants from their communities of origin have higher status aspirations or greater prospects for socioeconomic success. Finds only modest evidence to support this hypothesis among rural youth, and reports that only among White males are occupational and residential aspirations linked. (Author/ST)

Examines the pressures toward academic achievement in Chinese and European students in New Zealand through comparisons of the attitudes of the students, the attitudes they attribute to their parents, and the relationships between these two sets of attitudes. Determines which factors within the family and school environments influence adolescents' educational aspirations, examining differences among ethnic groups and between males and females using a sample of 2,896 high school seniors from the High School and Beyond Survey of 1985.
