Borman, Trisha H.; Bos, Hans; Park, So Jung; Auchstetter, Amelia – Journal of Research on Educational Effectiveness, 2021
In this paper, we report results from a multisite, student-level randomized controlled trial that examined the impact of the Building Assets, Reducing Risks (BARR) model on ninth-grade students. Short, Rachel A.; Van der Eb, Marina Y.; McKay, Susan R. – Journal of Educational Research, 2020
Active teachers noted persistent problems in their classrooms, including low levels of student engagement and gaps in students' use of evidence in forming arguments. Earth Science students provided written responses to two questions using the previously implemented Claim, Evidence, Reasoning (CER) framework. The first question was answered without…

Hinojosa, T.; Bos, J.; O'Brien, B.; Park, S.; Liu, F.; Jerabek, A. – Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness, 2016
Students beginning high school commonly experience increased stress and behavior problems alongside declines in grades, attendance, interest in school, and perceptions of academic competence and self-esteem (Alvidrez & Weinstein, 1993; Reyes et al., 2000). Moreover, research indicates that, relative to students who graduate from high school,…

O'Brien, Michael J.; Thompson, John R. – Physics Teacher, 2009
The Physics First movement--teaching a true physics course to ninth-grade students--is gaining popularity in high schools. There are several different rhetorical arguments for and against this movement, and it is quite controversial in physics education. However, there is no actual evidence to assess the success, or failure, of this substantial…
