According to a national survey by the College and University Personnel Association, there was a wider gap this year between the salary increases at private institutions, 6.8%, and those at public institutions, 4.5%. Private institutions might be catching up after years of high inflation. (MLW)

Alumni and other individuals' contributions to colleges rose sharply in academic 1985-86, totaling 48.8 percent of all donations. Institutions' fund-raising focus on individuals has succeeded in increasing the average gift and the number of gifts, while corporate gifts have grown more slowly. (MSE)

The National Research Council's survey of earned doctorates found a continuing decline in the proportion of Ph.D.'s earned by U.S. citizens. Among Blacks, more than half of the doctorates were in education-related fields. Cornell University and MIT have started recruitment efforts to encourage minority groups. (MLW)

The annual survey conducted by the Cooperative Institutional Research Program at the University of California at Los Angeles, found that freshmen continue to be preoccupied by material wealth and career success. Liberal stances on policy issues, new interest in teaching careers, and heightened fears of AIDS were also noted. (MLW)

Business schools, rich in resources and flooded with applicants, are doing little planning and are ignoring important trends. A three-year study that included visits to 60 business schools, interviews with 200 corporate executives, and surveys of 9,000 educators, executives, and business-school students and alumni is described. A survey of managers of 44 American Bell branch offices demonstrated that the videodisc is a very efficient tool for product introduction and training. Highlights of the survey are reported, focusing on responses to four survey questions, including type of training (group/individual) and comparison of videodiscs to other training media. (JN)
