Random Sampling, Randomization, and Equivalence of Contrasted Groups in Psychotherapy Outcome Research.
Hsu, Louis M.
Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, v57 n1 p131-37 Feb 1989
Identifies conditions under which equivalence is likely attained with simple random sampling and randomization in psychotherapy efficacy studies of kind examined in recent meta-analyses. Views consequences of nonequivalence as manifestations of Simpson's paradox. Expects misinterpretations of estimates of relative efficacy of treatments. Compares minimum sample sizes needed to protect against nonequivalence with those needed to satisfy other criteria. (Author/NB)
