This book is intended for persons, particularly in the helping fields, who wish to develop or improve their understanding of the group process, and their leadership skills. Chapter 1 contains an introduction about group process including information about the book format, strategies for obtaining group experience, and selected references on training group workers. Chapter 2 provides a definition of group counseling. Advantages of group counseling are explained, such as safety factors in groups, social value of group counseling, and feedback for growth. Chapter 3 provides a rationale for group counseling. In this chapter a psychological framework is established and related to the group process. Chapter 4 discusses the process of group counseling, and defines stages within the dynamic of group process. Chapter 5 identifies the developmental tasks contained within the group process. Chapter 6 describes and delineates the qualities, skills, and functions of effective group leaders. Chapter 7 considers the various aspects of group membership of which a group leader needs to be aware. Chapters 8, 9, and 10 focus on the technical dimensions of group work as a means of providing hands-on tools for implementing group programs. Chapter 11 addresses the nature and use of communication activities in groups. Chapter 12 examines family theory as a group resource. Suggested activities are included throughout the book to demonstrate the concepts and provide first-hand involvement with the group counseling process. Chapters provide references. (LLL)
