San Jose State University's School of Education is developing a pre/post test instrument to evaluate the effectiveness of classroom/behavior management courses offered to preservice education trainees. Expert input was sought from professors who teach courses on classroom/behavior management in order to find out what level of agreement would exist with respect to alternative solutions to behavior problems. Approximately 1,200 professors were provided with descriptions of 10 problem situations as well as a list of alternative techniques for dealing with them; they were asked to select the best alternative for handling each problem and make comments. Approximately one-third (432) of the professors returned usable questionnaires. The paper includes the 10 problem situations, alternative techniques for handling them, the percentage of professors who selected each of the alternative methods, a summary of the participants' responses, examples of their comments, and some suggestions for additional ways of handling the problems. The results show agreement on ineffective techniques and diverse opinions on effective techniques. Further research might investigate factors that influence decisions including: gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, training, experience, and philosophical approach. (LL)
