Texas School Dropout Survey Project. Volume 6: Program Responses--Their Nature and Effectiveness.
Intercultural Development Research Association, San Antonio, TX.
Volume 6, the sixth of eight publications developed by the Intercultural Development Research Association as part of the "Texas School Dropout Survey Project," focuses on program responses to the dropout problem. It describes a survey conducted to identify and evaluate in-school and out-of-school programs designed to address the dropout problem in Texas, explaining how program descriptions and characteristics, as reported by 99 survey respondents, were reviewed and condensed in order to generate profiles of programs at the individual and aggregate level. Program descriptions were developed in terms of three major categories: administration, instruction, and outcomes, with findings suggesting that a majority of the reported programs had academic goals (91%), a focus on instruction (55%), counseling (46%), and program completion (41%) as a desired outcome. Program characteristics were summarized in two categories: organization, and support. The findings summarized in this report indicate a need to identify, develop, evaluate, and replicate programs that successfully address the dropout problem in Texas. A need for centralized and accessible information on effective dropout programs in the state and across the nation is recognized. Executive summaries of program descriptions, program characteristics, and responses to requests for evaluation reports are presented in tabular form; a prototype of a dropout program is included. Relevant data are appended, and a dropout program directory is provided. (NB)
