Report by the Director-General to the General Conference, Twenty-Fourth Session, Paris 1987, on the Implementation of the Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Adopted by the International Conference on Education at Its Fortieth Session. Item 5.5 on the Provisional Agenda.
United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, Paris (France).
Pursuant to the special recommendation entitled "Education in the Fight against AIDS" adopted by the International Conference on Education at its 40th session (Geneva, Switzerland, December 1986), this document comprises the Director-General's proposals for a draft Unesco plan of action in this field, prepared during a consultation of national specialists jointly organized by Unesco and the World Health Organization. Paragraph 19 of these proposals is a resolution submitted for adoption by the General Conference, urging member states of the United Nations to participate actively, through educational programs, services, and financial contributions, in prevention and control of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The greater part of the report consists of four annexes. Annex I comprises Unesco's draft plan of action in education for the prevention of AIDS at the regional, national, and international levels, including an outline of general strategies and organizational tasks. Appended to this annex is an outline of a possible plan of action for preventive education on AIDS within the framework of the national plans developed by ministries of health in collaboration with the World Health Organization. The other annexes are: (1) the Fortieth World Health Assembly's resolution calling for a global strategy for the prevention and control of AIDS; (2) a similar resolution by the United Nations Economic and Social Council; and (3) the International Conference on Education's resolution promoting education in the fight against AIDS.
