Retention and Attrition of Declared Freshman (Discussion Item).
Indiana State Commission for Higher Education, Indianapolis.
The study reported in this document tracked a cohort of Indiana freshmen (about 47,000) with reported majors and categorized them as associate and baccalaureate, resident and nonresident, and part-time and full-time students. The objective to determine how these students fared in the course of the 4 years examined (fiscal years 1985-88). Included in the findings for associate students were: 26 percent of associate students were full-time and only 12 percent had dropped out, half the part-time associates dropped out, and cumulative grade-point averages for part-time students were slightly higher than for full-time students. Findings for baccalaureate students included the facts that 61 percent were full-time, of whom only 8 percent dropped out, while nearly 40 percent of the part-time students dropped out. About half of the students in the study were still in school at the study's completion; thus it was determined that it was too early to make a final assessment on this class. (GLR)
