First Report to the General Assembly of the Rhode Island Task Force on Teenage Suicide Prevention.
Rhode Island Office of the Lieutenant Governor, Providence.
This document reports on the activities of the Rhode Island Task Force on Teenage Suicide Prevention which held its first meeting in September 1985. The function, progress, membership, and meetings of the three committees (public relations, resource, and research) are discussed. A pilot program on suicide prevention is described which provided teachers in four public high schools with a 2-day workshop on suicide information and attitudes toward death and suicide. It is noted that teachers were expected to teach workshop information to their students. Early evaluation of the program is described as positive; helping behaviors reportedly increased. Regional and national networking activities on teenage suicide issues are discussed. National and statewide statistics on teenage suicides are presented, including results of a study of 70 teenage suicides from 1975-1983. The report concludes that teenage suicide is preventable and the task force will endeavor to institute a framework for comprehensive teenage suicide awareness. (ABL)
