Kalinowski, A.; Sloane, K. – Studies in Educational Evaluation, 1981
The new direction in research on the home educational environment is away from prediction based on indirect, static measures such as socioeconomic status. Instead, attention is focused on the teaching and modeling behavior in the home. Positive changes in the home environment often produce increases in children's school achievement. (RL)

Kroonenberg, Pieter M.; Snyder, Conrad W., Jr. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1989
Data on problem solving collected within the framework of G. Eckblad's cognitive theory of affect (1981) are analyzed with 3-mode principal component analysis. Eight tasks with 6 judgment scales were completed by 32 13-year-old boys. The effectiveness of the TUCKALS principal components analysis method is discussed. (SLD)

Ortony, Andrew; Turner, Terence J. – Psychological Review, 1990
The content of claims that basic emotions are the primitive building blocks of other nonbasic emotions is examined. It is suggested that the concept of basic emotions as elementary psychological primitives which explain other emotions is a false concept. An alternative approach is proposed. (SLD)

James, William – Psychological Review, 1994
Reviews the theories of C. Lange and William James on emotional consciousness, affirming it to be the effect of organic changes which express emotion. The name emotion might be considered to connote organic excitement as the distinctive feature of the state. (SLD)

Izard, Carroll E. – Psychological Review, 1993
A model is presented that describes four types of emotion-activating systems, three of which involve noncognitive information processing. The four systems are neural, sensorimotor, motivational, and cognitive. They may be seen as a loosely organized hierarchical arrangement, operating under a number of constraints. (SLD)

Siu, Angela F. Y. – Journal of Child and Family Studies, 2008
Studies in Hong Kong indicated that there is a tendency for young children to use internalizing as a means to cope with their daily difficulties. In this study, we explored the prevalence of internalizing problems among primary school children in Hong…

Nowicki, Elizabeth A. – Learning Disabilities: A Contemporary Journal, 2006
Research is clear about children's negative biases toward the opposite gender, toward peers of lower learning ability, and toward out-group members in general, especially among younger children. In adulthood, the magnitude and valence of attitudes may be dependent on cognitive, behavioral, or affective response classes, but little is known of how…

Feldman, Ruth – Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2007
Synchrony, a construct used across multiple fields to denote the temporal relationship between events, is applied to the study of parent-infant interactions and suggested as a model for intersubjectivity. Three types of timed relationships between the parent and child's affective behavior are assessed: concurrent, sequential, and organized in an…

Watkins, Megan – British Journal of Sociology of Education, 2007
The teacher's body has a dubious status within contemporary pedagogic practice. The impact of progressivism in many western countries, with its emphasis on student-centred learning, has resulted in a marginalisation of the teacher's role in many classrooms. While its influence appears to be waning, in Australian primary schools, student-centred…

Four weeks later, the video group recalled more information about the exemplar than the text…

This nonexperimental, longitudinal field study examines the extent to which variation in observed classroom supports (quality of emotional and instructional interactions and amount of exposure to literacy and math activities) predicts trajectories of achievement in reading and math from 54 months to fifth grade. Growth mixture modeling detected…
