Sesame Street in Sweden: A Study of the Pilot Programme SESAM. 164/72.
Filipson, Leni
This study designed to measure the audience appeal and teaching effectiveness of television programming in the Sesame Street format for Swedish children was conducted in a nursery school setting. A Swedish pilot program, SESAM, based half on American material, was shown to a total of 79 children between the ages of 4 and 6, and the effects were measured by pre- and post-testing and observation. Program attractiveness is reported in the context of visual, emotional, motor, and verbal behaviors, while the learning effect is discussed in terms of previous knowledge and changes in children's knowledge produced by the program for each of the three age groups. It was concluded that, although the program had great appeal for the children and many of them learned from both the Swedish and American produced sequences, there is still uncertainty as to whether this type of program would reach the target audience and whether it would be worth the expense of producing a Swedish version. Appendices include tables displaying the results of behavior observation, children's comments during the program, and responses to supplementary questions after the program. (RAO)
