A preceptorship in an internal medicine clerkship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is discussed and evaluated. The results of a telephone survey indicate that the preceptorship had an important impact on the students, who learned time management, office management, and management of chronic clinical problems. The author describes nurse practitioner students' evaluation of their clinical experience in three course practicums. The students valued the opportunity to actively apply newly learned knowledge and skills in a realistic context through working with a faculty preceptor in a clinical setting. (MF)
