Data Visualization in Art Education Research and Practice
Yiwen Wei
Art Education, v77 n2 p30-38 2024
Data visualization enables users to transform data into visually compelling graphics that tell a rich story for effective communication (Vora, 2019). Data visualization's visual and artistic nature has also attracted artists and educators, leading them to explore its application in artistic creation and education (e.g., Bertling et al., 2021; Dean & Bertling, 2020). However, scholars have debated whether the excessive emphasis on the creative and artistic presentation, rather than the data themselves, could compromise this approach's usability, efficiency, and accuracy for communication purposes (Li, 2018). Questions have been raised about what it means to teach data visualization in art classes. How can it inspire students in visual arts without simply becoming a supplement to other school subjects? Scholars in art integration have produced fruitful results and thoughtful recommendations for such interdisciplinary efforts (e.g., Marshall, 2019). To expand on this discussion, the author examined examples of data visualization in business, marketing, social studies, and art education to understand the similarities and differences between scientific and artistic perspectives. As a result of this endeavor, this article intertwines theoretical discussion with examples of data visualization to explore their applications in art education research and practice.
