Improving Student Proficiency in Solving Quadratic Equations
Reid O'Connor, Bronwyn
Australian Mathematics Education Journal, v4 n2 p29-38 2022
Quadratic equations are a notorious topic for the challenge it provides to students in secondary mathematics. Despite this, there is limited research, particularly in the Australian context, that explains why such challenges persist. This article details the causes of Year 11 students' difficulties in solving quadratic equations. Observing students' errors in solving quadratic equations gives important insight into key areas to address in the junior secondary mathematics classroom to set students up for success in this topic. The responses from students reveal the presence of stubborn misconceptions that persist for students studying advanced levels of mathematics in Year 11.
