Gallipoli Balloon Bursters: STEM Education at Its Finest (the Best Practical Activity I Have Ever Done!)
Liacos, Spiro
Teaching Science, v67 n2 p22-26 Jun 2021
At the end of the 1915 Gallipoli campaign during World War 1, Lance Corporal William Scurry saved thousands of lives with his one simple invention. As the ANZAC soldiers prepared to withdraw from the disastrous 9-monthlong Gallipoli campaign, Scurry came up with the idea of setting up a large battery of rifles that would discharge automatically using simple water clocks. The soldiers of the Ottoman Turkish army thought that their enemies were in the trenches shooting at them, but in fact, the ANZACs were withdrawing under the cover of night. In the practical activity described in this article, students will design and build a contraption that emulates this amazing ingenuity. In the activity, students design and build a contraption (using pins, retort stands, boss heads, icy-pole sticks, cups, and plasticine) that automatically bursts a balloon after a small time delay. The activity is easy to organise, the concept is simple, but the results are spectacular.
