Personalized Anchor Charts: Bridging Small-Group Work to Independence
Bacchioni, Shelby; Kurstedt, Rosanne L.
Reading Teacher, v72 n5 p652-658 Mar-Apr 2019
If you were to walk into this second-grade classroom during reading workshop, you would notice students reading books specific to their reading level and interest. You would also notice students using different tools to support their reading development. One of the teacher's goals is to help students become independent readers who are able to sustain their reading with fewer and fewer supports. With the assistance of a university-based literacy coach, the teacher used personalized anchor charts to enhance student engagement and ownership during independent reading. In this article, the authors discuss the teacher's process to bridge students' independence, from small-group guided practice to independent reading, with personalized anchor charts. The authors also provide readers with insights into how to implement such work in their own classrooms.
