Teachers and Community Service: A Plus for Both.
Hoffman, Ellen
"Service Plus" was designed as a pilot program to employ teachers in Bedford County, Tennessee over the summer to supplement their income and to develop services the community needed. Operating every summer since 1984, the program has provided employment to teachers in positions in the local human services, parks and recreation, juvenile services, and employment service agencies, a Congressman's office and the Shelbyville city manager's office. The philosophy of the program is based on the fact that teacher salaries are low and it is important for them to have the opportunity to earn extra income in summer jobs that are consistent with their training and expertise. One objective of the program is to recruit and retain quality teachers for the county schools. Following a description of the program and the activities of its participants, some recommendations are made for further development and expansion of "Service Plus" and similar summer employment programs for teachers.
